About HONG KONG

About HONG KONG

HONG KONG is one of the most densely populated places in the world with a land population density of 6,330 people per square kilometre, and a total population of 6.69 million people.

Up to 30 June 1997, HONG KONG was administered by the United Kingdom. With effect from 1 July 1997, the government of the People's Republic of China ("PRC") resumed its exercise of sovereignty over HONG KONG. On that date, HONG KONG became a Special Administrative Region of the PRC (HKSAR).

The agreement between UK and PRC provides that the HKSAR shall be directly under the authority of the Central People's Government of the PRC, shall enjoy a high degree of autonomy except in respect of foreign and defence affairs and shall be vested with executive, legislative and independent judicial power, including that of final adjudication. It also provides that the current social and economic systems in the HKSAR shall remain unchanged for a period of fifty years after 30th June 1997, and that the HKSAR shall retain the status of an international finance centre.

With 150 years of British colonial influence woven into 5,000 years of Chinese culture, HONG KONG is a city of contrasts in everything from food and medicine to art and architecture.

Geographically located at the southern edge of China, HONG KONG is in every respect the gateway to the cities, culture and countryside of Mainland China.

The cool dry season starting from mid-September offers the best time to visit HONG KONG, the City of Life.
